Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: NW Wind Stength: 10-23 knots Surf / Sea State: Mid Swell Air Temperature: hot sunny Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 19.4 kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 15 Nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
Arrived a bit late for the 2:15 high tide, and the Bradfield field was
already buzzing with familiar faces and a few new ones. Plenty of wind on
offer, and plenty of debate too — 4m/5m wings, 6.5/8.0 windfoiling, and
DC out there on the 9.5 race board. A great spread of kit across the sport:
five or six fin sailors, loads of wingers, and a strong showing of
windfoilers.
The field was hot, sunny, and windy with a NW breeze, although it was
swinging around and properly gusty at times.
Since I hadn’t been on the water for a while, I let Copilot set up my
kit. All I had to do was give it my gear and weight — it handled the
weather, peak wind windows, and even the tuning. It recommended a 6.6
E?Pace, whereas I’d have instinctively rigged a 7.2. It also gave me
Duotone min/max settings and told me to go “mid”, even though I’d
normally be below minimum trying to squeeze power. For the foil, I’d have
gone 1100/500 with zero spacer. AI said 1300/330 with a –0.5 spacer on
the 105 fuse (and agreed not to use the 95). Every time I questioned a
deviation, it had a solid reason.
The real test was on the water. I usually plant the mast foot about 2 cm
behind the front mark — AI said “mid”. As always, the first big gust
flattened me within 50 metres. First time out in a year, so fair enough.
But once I got going, the settings were surprisingly good. Shockingly good,
actually. I felt more comfortable than my usual slightly tortured
stance.
The wind ramped up well beyond forecast, so the 7.2 would have been a
disaster. I’d have had to quit or re?rig. The 1300 front wing kept me
flying through the lulls, so those AI dimensions are staying.
The wingers have definitely levelled up — some stylish gybes out there
— and I still miss fins. A couple of the fin guys came past on the same
reach like I was parked, easily nudging 30 knots.
All in all, a cracking day for everyone, even with the gusty swings. Sun,
wind, mates, and plenty of action on the water.
